History

The Rio Theatre was built in 1938 and was part of the Odeon chain of single-screen cinemas until 1955, when the rise of television shut it along with several other theatres in the city. It became Broadway Cinema in 2001. In 2008 new owner Corinne Lea began adding live music and multidisciplinary art events to the film program, and in 2018 the theatre ran a "Save the Rio" campaign after developers showed interest in buying the building. It has 409 seats and a large stage for live events.
