The Greats We Lost
Boston
Broadway's Dark Tonight is the performers we lost this year. Last Call is the buildings that closed after a long run.

Last Call · Closing, 2026
Abilene Bar and Lounge
Rochester room, nearly 20 years. Brighton’s Hi-Fi Lounge, 40 years, was up for sale in the same stretch — not yet a closed sign.
A city loses the weeknight before it loses the name. Abilene is the one shutting. Hi-Fi is the one on the market. Neither belongs in a “coming soon” list.

Valhalla
Metal club on Red River, 17 years. The building was sold. The district asked the city to move faster.
Seventeen years of metal on Red River. The building was sold, and the cultural district asked the city to move faster after Empire Control Room, Marlow, and Feels So Good had already closed. Red River is how Austin stayed a music street after the festivals got the skyline. This one is for the door, not the lease.

Sound-Bar
River North nightclub at Ontario and Franklin, open since 2003. The building sold for apartments. The club was given about eight months to leave.
Twenty years of a dance floor is a long run for a basement. The walls stay. The night does not. Last call for the room, not the apartments.
Chicago Sun-Times, via Nexus Radio, July 27, 2026Last Call · Cahuenga room closed, early 2026
Hotel Cafe
The songwriter room on Cahuenga, 25 years. A new address was announced for 2027. It is not this room.
Twenty-five years of songwriters on Cahuenga, a small stage where someone could still be unknown on purpose. Adele, Sara Bareilles, and Damien Rice are the origin story the press tells. The loss is the room itself. A new address was announced for 2027. If it opens, it is a different door.

Rory Bourke
Country songwriter, 84. Born in Cleveland. Nashville since 1964. “The Most Beautiful Girl” and “You Look So Good in Love.”
Cleveland kid who moved to Music Row in 1964 and wrote for a living. Charlie Rich’s “The Most Beautiful Girl,” George Strait’s “You Look So Good in Love,” Anne Murray’s “A Little Good News,” plus songs Elvis cut. Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, 1989. The dinner on October 26 is where the city said his name back.

Freddie Jackson
R&B singer, 70. “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight.” The notices did not name a city.
A slow song that still gets a room to sway is a local instrument even when the notices never named the town. One of the greats we lost.

Angela Stribling
Jazz singer, and the first woman to host WHUR’s Quiet Storm, 58. Born in Buffalo. The station, and the celebration of life, are Washington.
Her husband, Ken Washington, said she died at home after two years with brain cancer. Ed Gordon called her a sweet soul. This one is for the overnight voice, not the network logo.

Chad Gilbert
Guitarist and songwriter, New Found Glory, 45. Coral Springs. His wife and the band said he died in his sleep.
Coral Springs is not a Miami club, and the notice still belongs on the nearest board. The band wrote that the guitar, the jokes, and the drive shaped them for nearly thirty years. The hospital lobby filled. One of the greats we lost.

Cheetah Chrome
Guitarist, Dead Boys and Rocket from the Tombs, 71. Died in Nashville. The band was Cleveland.
Punk does not get a long third act on most boards. The first one still counts. Cleveland knows the room. Nashville is where the notice landed.

Dolly Parton
Country singer and songwriter, 80. Nashville.
She wrote a catalog the whole country sang, then built Dollywood so the town had a front door. Broadway can keep the costume. The Station Inn week still sits in the city she made the point of the map.
