History

Meridian Hall opened on October 1, 1960, as the O'Keefe Centre for the Performing Arts, designed by Peter Dickinson. It was later the Hummingbird Centre (1996–2007) and the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (2007–2019). The stage has hosted touring productions of the Kirov Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera, and the Bolshoi Ballet performed there in 1974. The City designated it a heritage building in 2008, and it reopened after two years of renovation on October 1, 2010, fifty years to the day after its first opening night.
