The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres were built in 1913 as the flagship of Marcus Loew's theatre chain. The Ontario Heritage Foundation bought the structure from Famous Players in 1981. The building closed in 1987 for a full restoration of both theatres and reopened in 1989.
