History

The current El Mocambo building on Spadina Avenue dates from 1910 and held a dry goods store, a barbershop and restaurants before the club officially opened on March 23, 1948, with Latin music on its second-floor dance floor. Michael Baird and Tom Kristenbrun bought the business and building in 1972. Acts such as Tom Waits, U2, Elvis Costello, Blondie, the Ramones, Devo, Joan Jett and Stevie Ray Vaughan played the club. After their 1986 sale it went through many owners, and Wikidata now lists Michael Wekerle as owner.
