History

The Cathedral Church of St. James is the fourth church on its site; construction began in 1850 and it opened for services on June 19, 1853, with Frederick William Cumberland and Thomas Ridout listed as architects. The first church, built of wood in 1807, was used as a hospital during the War of 1812 and enlarged with a bell tower in 1818. After a fire in January 1839 it was rebuilt and reopened that December, and the church became a cathedral in 1936. Wikidata records it as a designated heritage property.
