Buddies In Bad Times Theatre

History

Buddies in Bad Times was founded by Sky Gilbert, Matt Walsh and Jerry Ciccoritti and incorporated in Toronto in 1979. It started with Gilbert's Angels in Underwear, staged in an old brewery on Queen Street East, and the founders went on to launch the Rhubarb Festival of Canadian Plays with playwright Fabian Boutilier in January 1979. The company became known in the 1980s as a queer theatre company, though it was not founded with that aim. By 1993 it had negotiated a 40-year lease with the city for its theatre.
