Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal

(866) 842-2925 · Map

110 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest, Montréal, QC H2Y 1T1

History

The first Notre-Dame church on this site was inaugurated in 1683, and it served briefly as the first cathedral of the Diocese of Montreal in 1821 and 1822. By 1824 the congregation had outgrown it; a building committee formed in 1823 had been asked to find an architect for a church that could hold 8,000 worshippers. The present basilica, designed by James O'Donnell, dates from 1829 according to Wikidata, and its Sacré-Cœur chapel was inaugurated on December 8, 1891. It is a National Historic Site of Canada and part of a Quebec heritage property.
