History

The Opera House on Quay Street opened on Boxing Day 1912 as the New Theatre, to a design by Albert Richardson. It became the New Queen's Theatre in 1915 and took the Opera House name in 1920 under John Hart and United Theatres Ltd. After spells as a cinema during the Second World War and as a bingo hall, it was returned to theatre use by the Palace Trust in 1984, passed to Apollo Leisure in 1990 and was sold to Ambassador Theatre Group in 2009. The Grade II listed building seats 1,920, according to Wikidata, and its orchestra pit holds 80 musicians.
