History

Niamos occupies the former Hulme Hippodrome, built between 1901 and 1902 and opened on 6 October 1902. Around 1929 it became the Junction Picture Theatre, a cinema, and in 1950 it was sold and turned back into a theatre called The Playhouse. The BBC bought it in 1956 as a production venue for radio and television and made its last production there on 25 August 1986. With funding from Manchester City Council and other groups, the building then became an arts centre, the Nia Centre, now known as NIAMOS.
