The Jamaica Street building went up around 1860 as a five-storey commercial warehouse and opened as the Grand Central cinema in 1915, seating 750. It closed in 1966, reopened in 1973 as the Classic Grand with 365 seats, became the Cannon-Grand in 1985 and showed its last films in 1992. It has been a category B listed building since December 1970.
