Avalon

1735 N. Vine St., Hollywood, CA, 90028

History

The building at 1735 N. Vine Street opened on January 24, 1927, as the Hollywood Playhouse, designed by Gogerty and Weyl. It later housed the WPA Federal Theatre, Ken Murray’s Blackouts under the El Capitan name, the Jerry Lewis Theatre, and ABC’s Hollywood Palace, where the Beatles made their first West Coast appearance in 1964. Seats later came out and the house ran as the Palace dance club until Hollywood Entertainment Partners bought it in September 2002 and reopened it as Avalon in September 2003. The Hollywood room, across from Capitol Records, holds about 1,500 people and books concerts and club nights.
