The Fabulous Fox Theatre

527 N. Grand Blvd., St Louis, MO, 63103

History

The Fabulous Fox Theatre is a performing arts house at 527 N. Grand Boulevard in the Grand Center Arts District. Movie pioneer William Fox opened it on January 31, 1929, as a movie palace designed by C. Howard Crane in a Siamese-Byzantine style. After the theater declined, Fox Associates, including Leon and Mary Strauss, bought it in 1981. A restoration led by Mary Strauss returned the elephant carpet, the roughly 2,000-pound chandelier, and about 4,500 seats, and the house reopened on September 7, 1982, with the musical Barnum. It has since presented Broadway, concerts, and comedy.
