History

The Roxy Theatre opened on September 20, 1973, on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, in a building that had been the Largo, an upscale burlesque club. Elmer Valentine and Lou Adler opened it with partners David Geffen, Elliot Roberts, and Peter Asher; Neil Young played the first three nights. The roughly 500-capacity rock club has also hosted theater and comedy, including the first American run of The Rocky Horror Show in 1974 and Paul Reubens’s Pee-wee Herman revue in 1981. It remains a standing-room nightclub at 9009 Sunset Boulevard, still tied to the Adler family.
