History
The Vancouver Art Gallery Association was set up in April 1931 and opened the museum to the public at 1145 West Georgia Street on 5 October 1931, in a building by the firm Sharp and Johnston. In 1938 the museum was one of the buildings occupied by unemployed protesters during the sitdown strike in the weeks before Bloody Sunday. The gallery now occupies Francis Rattenbury's former provincial courthouse, which was converted for museum use in the early 1980s and designated the Former Vancouver Law Courts National Historic Site of Canada in 1980. The Government of British Columbia still owns the building, and the gallery holds it on a 99-year sublease signed with the City of Vancouver in 1974.
