History

Smalls Jazz Club is a basement jazz room at 183 West 10th Street in Greenwich Village. Mitchell Borden, a former Navy submariner, nurse, and jazz violinist, opened it in 1994 as a no-alcohol, bring-your-own-beer club with a $10 door and sets that could run until morning. It closed after financial trouble in the early 2000s, reopened in 2004, and in 2007 pianist Spike Wilner and Lee Kostrinsky became partners with Borden. The club is still known for modern bebop and hard bop and for late-night jam sessions.
