Alumnae Theatre was founded in 1918 by women graduates of the University of Toronto who wanted to keep making semi-professional theatre. Then called the University Alumnae Dramatic Club, it performed at Hart House Theatre for its first 30 years. From 1957 it moved through several homes, including a coach house on Huntley Street and a converted synagogue on Cecil Street. Its current building dates from 1905 and was renovated and restored by the company in 1972.
