Designed by Arthur Harrison, the Digbeth building that houses the O2 Institute officially opened on 16 January 1908 as an institutional church attached to Carr's Lane Congregational Church. Birmingham City Council bought it in 1955 for use as a civic hall, and as Digbeth Civic Hall it hosted Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1983. In 2005 Channelfly turned the 400-capacity cellar into the Birmingham Barfly. Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, The Human League, Arctic Monkeys and The Cure are among the bands the venue says it has hosted.
