Lion's Lair is a small, gritty dive bar and music room at 2022 East Colfax Avenue, and its owners call it the oldest live entertainment venue in Denver. The building dates to at least 1926 and has been an auto shop, a clothing store and the Skol Inn. In the 1950s it was a jazz bar called the Playboy Lounge, until Playboy paid to take the name. Then it was the Playroom and the Aladdin Lounge. John Lyons bought it in 1972, and it became the Lion's Lair in 1974. Often called 'the CBGB of Denver,' it has hosted John Doe, Jonathan Richman, Jello Biafra and Mike Watt. The community helped it survive the pandemic.
