Fort Worth · 352 Cypress St., Fort Worth

The Paramount Theatre at 352 Cypress Street in downtown Abilene opened on May 19, 1930. H. O. Wooten built it next to his Hotel Wooten, and architect David S. Castle designed it. It's an 'atmospheric' movie palace, with an auditorium made to look like a Spanish-Moorish courtyard at night and clouds drifting across a ceiling of twinkling stars. Downtown declined, and it closed in 1979. The Abilene Preservation League saved it, and it was restored and reopened on May 21, 1987. Today its 1,187 seats host film, ballet, opera, concerts and local performing groups.
