Cary Street Cafe opened in 1994 at 2631 West Cary Street and, under longtime owner Robyn McManis, became known as Richmond's hippie bar. The room booked daily live music, from jam bands to reggae, jazz, bluegrass, and rock and roll, and played Grateful Dead as house music amid Dead-themed decor. It stayed open through a 2019 listing for sale after 24 years.
