Germantown · 1101 E Burnett Ave, Louisville, KY
Check Sumpter opened Check's Cafe in Louisville's Germantown in 1935, just after Prohibition, as a simple whiskey-and-beer tavern. He sold it about nine years later to Joe Murrow Sr., who ran it until his death in 1980 and made it a neighborhood regulars' joint. Grandson John Murrow took over around 2005. At 1101 East Burnett the Schnitzelburg cafe still serves the old menu and hosts nights of karaoke and dancing.
