History

John Shoemaker and Jeni Brown opened JJ’s Bohemia in 2006 on M.L. King Boulevard at Houston Street, in a narrow exposed-brick room that holds about 150. The club books local bands and early-career touring indie, rock, and folk acts, along with comedy, open mics, and dance nights. Consequence of Sound later ranked the room among the country’s best small music venues. Shoemaker has kept it going as a place for Chattanooga musicians; the club marked its 19th year in 2025.
