History

PhilaMOCA, the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art, occupies the Finney & Son building at 531 N. 12th Street, a former mausoleum showroom dating to the 1860s. Producer Diplo bought the building in the mid-2000s and used it as Mad Decent’s headquarters and a late-night room; the first Mad Decent Block Party was held on the street out front. He rented it in 2010 to Gavin Hecker, who opened PhilaMOCA that September, and Eric Bresler took over programming in March 2012. The space focuses on underground film, performance, and DIY shows, and reopened in July 2021 after a closure with a screening of the film Mausoleum.
