The Old Miami

History

The Old Miami is a veterans’ dive and live-music bar at 3930 Cass Avenue in Detroit’s Cass Corridor. WDET’s CuriosiD history traces the name to the Miami Lounge, which opened on Cass in 1947, then through a rough stretch and a fire at The New Miami. Current owner Danny Overstreet opened The Old Miami in 1980, with “Miami” standing in his telling for “missing in action Michigan.” The room is packed with military memorabilia, has a backyard with a koi pond, and still books live bands alongside its neighborhood-bar trade.
