History

Riley’s Tavern occupies a Hunter building that was the Galloway Saloon before Prohibition; the main structure dates to about 1895. In September 1933, 17-year-old J. C. Riley drove to Austin and received what the tavern calls Texas’s first post-Prohibition beer license, then opened the joint in the old saloon. He ran it until illness closed it in 1991. Rick and Donna Wilson reopened it in 1995 under the same name, and Joel and Angie Hofmann have owned it since 2004. The Texas Historical Commission marked it in 2013. It is a Hill Country honky-tonk between New Braunfels and San Marcos, booking live country and roots music.
