John T. Floore's Country Store

History

John T. Floore, a former manager of San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre, opened Floore’s Country Store in Helotes in 1942 as a grocery and beer joint for travelers between San Antonio and Bandera. He soon added dancing, and by the 1950s the store was booking Ray Price, Bob Wills, Johnny Cash, and Ernest Tubb. Willie Nelson played there regularly early in his career; Floore partnered in the Willie Nelson Music Company, and Nelson name-checked him in “Shotgun Willie.” The National Register-listed honky-tonk still serves tamales and beer and books country and roots shows on an indoor dance floor and a larger outdoor stage.
