ASU Gammage

1200 South Forest Avenue, Tempe, AZ, 85287

History

ASU Gammage, at 1200 S. Forest Avenue in Tempe, opened on September 18, 1964, with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. Grady Gammage asked Frank Lloyd Wright to design a hall in 1957, and the plan was adapted from Wright’s unbuilt opera house for Baghdad; after both men died in 1959, William Wesley Peters finished the building. Ground was broken in 1962. The roughly 3,000-seat auditorium, the only public Wright building in Arizona and a National Register landmark, books Broadway tours and concerts.
