History

The Shubert Theatre, 247 College Street, New Haven, was built by Lee and J.J. Shubert and named for their brother Sam. Architect Albert Swazey’s house opened December 11, 1914, with The Belle of Bond Street. It presented plays, musicals, and concerts for decades, closed in 1976 under a demolition threat, and was restored and reopened; CAPA now operates the nonprofit. Wikipedia lists about 1,600 seats. Girl Named Tom plays there with Vitamin String Quartet on October 17, 2026. (shubert.com/history; Wikipedia; Shubert event page.)
