History

The Fox Theatre is the live-music club at 1135 13th Street on University Hill in Boulder, across from the University of Colorado, not the Fox houses in Atlanta or Detroit. The building dates to 1926 and had already been the Rialto Theater, the Buffalo Dancing Club, the Anchorage Bar & Grill, Ted’s Buff Cafe, and, from 1961, the Fox movie theater, whose marquee and Fox sign are still on the facade. Partners James and Charles Hambleton, Dave MacKenzie, Jon O’Leary, Don Strasburg, and Dicke Sidman opened it as a concert room on March 6, 1992, with The Meters. It seats just over 600 and books national and local rock, jam, and indie shows; The Fray signed a record deal on its stage in 2004.
