History
The Michigan Theater at 603 E. Liberty Street opened January 5, 1928, as Ann Arbor’s movie palace, designed by Maurice Finkel for Angelo Poulos and W. S. Butterfield’s circuit. Opening night paired the film A Hero for a Night with vaudeville and a Barton theater organ. In 1978 a plan to turn it into retail space led neighbors to form a nonprofit and buy it from the Poulos family. A restoration that started in 1986 and finished in 2002 put the auditorium back; the Michigan Theater Foundation still runs it for film and live shows.
