Golden Light Cafe & Cantina

History

Golden Light Cafe's own history says Chester "Pop" Ray and his wife Louise established the cafe in 1946 at the Route 66 address it still uses. Pop was ill at the opening, so son Charles and Charles's wife Edye served the first day and took in $10.48. Pop ran it until 1957, Dorothy Gaulden until 1979, then Bill and Pat Alexander. Fourth owner Marc Reed added the Cantina in 1996, which the cafe calls Amarillo's main room for national and local live music.
