History
Roanoke cultural center in the former Jefferson High School. The center's history says the school opened in 1924, built for $147,000 with an auditorium larger than a school needed; after the school closed, a $9 million campaign from 1997 to 2003 restored that hall as the roughly 900-seat Shaftman Performance Hall.
