Englert Theatre

History

The Englert Theatre is a renovated vaudeville-era playhouse in downtown Iowa City, now a 725-seat community arts center owned and run year-round by the nonprofit Englert Civic Theatre. It was listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and, in 2021, became a contributing property in the Iowa City Downtown Historic District. It presents live music, comedy, dance, and other events. A photograph of horse-drawn buggies outside the theatre is dated between 1917 and 1920.
