History
The NorShor stands on the site of Duluth’s Grand Opera House, which burned in 1889. G.G. Hartley opened the Orpheum there on August 22, 1910 as a vaudeville house. In 1941 the Minnesota Amusement Company reversed the interior and reopened it as the Art Deco NorShor movie theatre, designed by Liebenberg and Kaplan. The city bought the dark theatre in 2010 and later restored it for live performance. The theatre’s site still uses historic marquee photographs of the Superior Street house.
