Majestic Theatre

224 E. Houston St., San Antonio, TX, 78205

History

The Majestic Theatre opened on June 14, 1929, at 224 E. Houston Street as the flagship of Karl Hoblitzelle’s Interstate circuit. John Eberson designed it as an atmospheric movie palace, with a Spanish courtyard auditorium and a ceiling of projected clouds, and it was the first fully air-conditioned theater in Texas. It opened with vaudeville and film and later became a downtown concert and touring house. Listed on the National Register in 1975 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1993, it was restored and reopened in 1989. The city owns the 2,264-seat theater, which presents Broadway tours, concerts, and other stage shows.
