History

The present Heights Theater, at 339 W. 19th Street, opened on May 14, 1929, as an independent neighborhood movie house built for the Wygant family. It screened films for decades, then was gutted by an arson fire in 1969 during a run of I Am Curious (Yellow). Gus and Sharon Kopriva bought the shell in the late 1980s and used it as an art space. Dallas venue operator Edwin Cabaniss purchased it in 2015, restored it on the model of his Kessler Theater, and reopened it in late November 2016 with Hays Carll. The room now books intimate concerts, independent films, and community events.
