History
The Fisher Theatre sits inside Detroit’s Fisher Building in New Center and opened on November 11, 1928, as a movie and vaudeville house with a Mayan Revival interior, a Wurlitzer organ, banana trees, and live macaws. Broadway in Detroit’s history says the Nederlander family remodeled it as a live theater in 1961, cutting the original roughly 3,500 seats to 2,089 and replacing the décor with marble, rosewood, walnut, crystal, and bronze. The house hosted pre-Broadway runs of Hello, Dolly!, Fiddler on the Roof, and Sweet Charity. The Nederlanders ran it until 2021, when the Ambassador Theatre Group bought the venue. Wikipedia notes the Fisher Building is a National Historic Landmark.
