History

The Majestic Theatre at 1925 Elm Street opened April 11, 1921, as the flagship vaudeville house of Karl Hoblitzelle’s Interstate Amusement Company, designed by John Eberson to replace an earlier Majestic that had burned. Films gradually took over the bill until the theater closed on July 16, 1973, after a last showing of Live and Let Die. The Hoblitzelle Foundation gave the building to the City of Dallas, it was listed on the National Register in 1977, and the restored performing-arts house reopened on January 16, 1983. The city-owned theater now seats about 1,704 for concerts, comedy, dance, and touring stage shows.
