History

Evangelo’s Cocktail Lounge opened in 1971, founded by Greek immigrant Evangelo Klonis, who had settled in Santa Fe in the early 1930s and served in World War II before he was granted citizenship. The cash-only bar on West San Francisco Street, across from the Lensic, stayed in the family under his son, Nick Klonis. A 2002 postage stamp used a wartime photograph of Evangelo. The lounge bills itself as a live-music room, with bands upstairs and a downstairs pool hall.
