History

Jody and Steve Newman opened The Friendly Spot Ice House in September 2009 at 943 South Alamo in Southtown's King William district. The name revives a 1970s icehouse, the original Friendly Spot, which from about 1973 to 1981 occupied a converted 1930s gas station at Alamo and Beauregard and was a proving ground for San Antonio roots music, hosting acts including Joe King Carrasco, Angela Strehli, and an early edition of Steve Earle's Dukes. The newer beer garden is known for a huge tap list and a family-friendly patio.
