Lightning Bolt is a noise-rock duo from Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 1994 by Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson while they were students at the Rhode Island School of Design. Chippendale plays drums and sings, often through a contact microphone and a mask he makes himself, and Gibson plays bass. An early third member, Hisham Bharoocha, left in 1996. The duo became known for extremely loud sets, including shows played on the floor rather than a stage, and released albums such as Wonderful Rainbow (2003), Hypermagic Mountain (2005), Fantasy Empire (2015), and Sonic Citadel (2019) on Load Records and Thrill Jockey.
